From very thin biaxially-oriented (BOPP) films, through cast and blown
films, flexible packaging embraces a wide spectrum of end-use applications,
for example :
- food packaging-typically snack foods, candies, crisps and cookies
which demand high product purity coupled with superior processability
- tobacco film-where stiffness and controlled shrinkage are key parameters
- consumer goods wrapping-such as flowers, apparel and textiles, which
require high transparency and sometimes a softer feel
- pouches-a high growth area particularly in liquid packaging, introduced
to reduce costs and packaging waste, needing strength and toughness
Relevant properties required by these applications include :
- stiffness (or softness)
- strength and/or tear resistance
- sealability
- processability
- optical properties (incl. gloss, haze, transparency…)
- organoleptics and food approvals
